PAUL DENNIS, earned his BFA at the Juilliard School, and MFA at Purchase College, Conservatory of Dance. A former member of José Limón Dance Company, Paul now serves as the Chair of the Dance Department at Hunter College, NYC. His current research blends studies in Laban/Bartenieff Movement Analysis (L/BMA) and dance with research in neuroscience to examine the effects of L/BMA-based dance on the functional mobility in individuals with Huntington’s Disease (HD).
Paul is interested in assessing the motor features of HD (oculomotor, dysarthria, chorea, dystonia, gait, and postural stability) in the hopes of recording positive change on neurodegenerative diseases. He hopes this study will go a step beyond its predecessors to create a functional record of movement interventions, which if deemed to have positive effects, can later be replicated in future work and in a clinical setting.
Movement Intervention for Neurodegenerative Disease (MIND) is rooted in the brain’s ability to form and reorganize synaptic connections following injury. Paul is curious about the effects of dance on functional mobility in individuals with HD, and evaluates L/BMA as a replicable method to capture, the kinematic (velocity, acceleration and momentum) and non-kinematic (posture/position) aspects of movement by individuals with HD. Since 2012 Paul and his team of dancers interested in Physical Therapy, Psychology and Neuroscience have been working with individuals with HD in Massachusetts. They have presented at annual HD conferences as well as taught classes at local and regional support groups, HD Centers of Excellence and residential organizations.
